The year 1966 was a turning point in my life as I considered leaving several years of playing trumpet in concert band, and playing in a tribute band to Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. Instead, to my mother’s dismay, I would take up guitar to chase a dream of being a rock -n-roll entertainer. From 1966 through 1972, I would spend most of my time organizing rock bands and booking performance gigs with the objective of making people dance. Revolver is the music that the Beatles had released when they too were making a change in their musical career; they would never again play a live performance on stage, but instead would only make studio music.
Revolver is the seventh studio album by the English rock band the Beatles. It was released on 5 August 1966 by Parlophone in the United Kingdom and on 8 August 1966 by Capitol Records in the United States.
In 1966, HIT songs were released on 45’s vinyl records. Taxman was the HIT song on side A, but the song on side B was my favorite, and it never made it to an LP until Beatles songs were being remixed. That song was: Paperback Writer

George was the only Beatle to play on this track. He was joined by an Indian tabla player and studio musicians.
10:57 – 5. Here, There And Everywhere
A ballad written by Paul for his girlfriend, Jane Asher, it is thought that The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” was a big influence for this song.
13:25 – 6. Yellow Submarine
A modern day nursery rhyme, and inspiration for the animated film of 1968.
16:07 – 7. She Said She Said
Based on a conversation with actor Peter Fonda, this was originally a very aggressive song by John, but later rewritten.

This track followed a trend for “sunny” songs in 1966, such as the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Daydream” abd “Sunny Afternoon” by The Kinks.
20:59 – 9. And Your Bird Can Sing
Although Beatle fans searched for deep meaning in this song, John Lennon insisted it was a simple track, written to fill a gap in the album.
23:01 – 10. For No One
Only Paul and Ringo play on this track, which has a French Horn solo by classical musician Alan Civil.
25:05 – 11. Doctor Robert
The doctor in the title was a friend of The Beatles, well known on the New York art scene.
27:24 – 12. I Want To Tell You (George Harrison)
The book that wrote this said that this was not one of George’s best songs, this track documents the difficulty he often had in saying what he really meant.
29:55 – 13. Got To Get You Into My Life
The Beatles also offered this song to a group known as Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers. Their cover single, produced by Paul, made the UK Top 10 a week after Revolver was released.
32:27 – 14. Tomorrow Never Knows
The Beatles’ most experimental track to date, this mystical- sounding song, which does not include the words “tomorrow never knows” was originally called “Mark 1”, until Ringo came up with the title.

E150D – food coloring, obtained through the processing of sugar at specified temperatures, with or without addition of chemical reagents. In the case with coca-cola, ammonium sulfate is added.
E952 – Sodium Cyclamate is a sugar substitute. Cyclamate is a synthetic chemical, has sweet taste, which is 200 times sweeter than sugar, and is used as an artificial sweetener. In 1969 it was banned by FDA, since it as well as saccharin and aspartame, caused cancer in rats’ urinary bladder. In 1975, prohibition seized also Japan, South Korea and Singapore. In 1979, WHO (World Health Organization), “who knows why?” rehabilitated cyclamates and recognizing them as safe.
E950 – Acesulfame Potassium. 200 times sweeter than sugar, containing methyl ether, where it aggravates the operation of the cardiovascular system. Likewise, it contains asparaginic acid which can also cause excitant effect on our nervous system and in time it can lead to addiction. Acesulfame is badly dissolved and is not recommended for use by children and pregnant women.
E951 – Aspartame. A sugar substitute for diabetics and is chemically unstable: at elevated temperature it breaks down into methanol and phenylalanine. Methanol is very dangerous: 5-10ml can cause destruction of the optic nerve and irreversible blindness. In warm soft drinks, aspartame transforms into formaldehyde which is very strong carcinogen. Some number of cases with aspartame poisoning include: unconsciousness, headaches, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, palpitation, weight gain, irritability, anxiety, memory loss, blurry vision, fainting, joint pains, depression, fertility, hearing loss and etc. Aspartame can also provoke the following diseases: brain tumors, MS (Multiple Sclerosis), epilepsy, Graves’ disease, chronic fatigue, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, mental deficiency and tuberculosis.

E338 – Orthophosphoric Acid. This can cause irritation of skin and eyes. It is used for production of phosphoric acid salts of ammonia, sodium, calcium, aluminum and also in organic synthesis for production of charcoal and film tapes, for production of refractory materials, ceramics, glass, fertilizers, synthetic detergents, medicine, metalworking, and textile and oil industries. Food orthophosphoric acid is used in the production of carbonated water and for preparation of ingredients in pastry. It is known that orthophosphoric acid interfere with the absorption of calcium and iron from the body, which can cause weakening of bones and osteoporosis. Other side effects are thirst and skin rashes.
E330 – Citric Acid. It is widely spread in nature and is used in pharmaceutical and food industries. Salts of citric acid (citrates) are used in food industry as acids, preservatives, stabilizers, and in medical fields – for preserving blood.
Aromas – unknown aromatic additives
E211 – Sodium Benzoate. It is used in production of some food products, as an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent. These products refer to jams, fruit juices and fruit yoghurts. It’s not recommended for use by asthmatics and people who are sensitive to aspirin. A study conducted by Peter Piper at the Sheffield University in Britain, found that this compound causes significant damage to DNA. According to his words, sodium benzoate which is an active component in preservatives doesn’t destroy DNA, but deactivating it. This can lead to cirrhosis and degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease.
So, what turns out? Well, it turns out that “the secret recipe” of coca-cola is just one advertising play. What kind of secret may be there, when it’s well known to us that this is a weak solution of cocaine with preservatives, colorants, stabilizers and etc. I.e., this is legalized cocaine addiction plus pure poison. Diet Coke is even worse, because the aspartame in it, replaces sugar, becoming pure neurotoxic poison.
So, if you can’t imagine a life without coca-cola, take advantage of the following recommendations:

What You Need To Know About Obamacare’s Individual Mandate (And How Much It Costs To Ignore It)
The big Obamacare deadline looming on March 31 isn’t just the last chance for most Americans to buy health insurance this year. It’s also the last chance to avoid paying penalties under the Affordable Care Act’s dreaded “individual mandate.”
The individual mandate is one of the best-known but least-understood parts of President Barack Obama’s signature health-care reform law. Here’s how the mandate works, how much it costs to ignore the rule, and how you may be able to get out of it.
Who must have health insurance under Obamacare?
Practically everybody. But most Americans won’t have to do anything on March 31. That’s because about 80 percent of Americans already have health coverage — through their jobs, a government program like Medicare or Medicaid, or directly from an insurance company. The small percentage of Americans who aren’t insured risk having to pay a penalty under Obamacare. The complicated official name for this is the “individual shared responsibility payment.” The IRS has more information, in case you thirst for still more complicated official language.
Who is exempt?
Many people are exempt from the mandate. Undocumented immigrants don’t have to comply because they’re not even allowed to use Obamacare’s new insurance exchanges to buy coverage. Many Native Americans also don’t have to comply, nor do those whose religious beliefs reject health insurance, people who don’t make enough money to file federal income taxes, and people who can’t find a health plan that costs less than 8 percent of their incomes. There’s a full list here.
Then there’s the “hardship exemption.” The Obama administration is interpreting this part of the ACA very broadly, opening the door for lots and lots of people to potentially qualify.
There are 14 different categories of hardship exemption, including things like being homeless, experiencing a death in the family, and filing for bankruptcy. And the administration is letting anyone whose old insurance policy was canceled because it didn’t meet Obamacare standards apply for an exemption. The vaguest exemption, and therefore potentially the most useful to people who don’t want to get health coverage, is described as: “You experienced another hardship in obtaining health insurance.” And for some of these 14 reasons, you’re not even required to show documentation of your hardship.
What’s the penalty for not having health insurance?
People who go without coverage for more than three months this year will owe the IRS money for each additional month they are uninsured when they file their federal income taxes next year. The minimum penalty is $95 for each adult in a household and $47.50 for each child younger than 18 years old, capped at $285 no matter how large a family is. There’s also some wiggle room regarding the three-month grace period: Anyone who enrolls by the end of this month won’t owe a penalty even though their benefits may not kick until May 1.
Most taxpayers subject to the penalty will owe more than that, though. Under the law, the amount is the higher of $95 or 1 percent of household income minus the first $10,150 for a single person or $20,300 for a married couple filing jointly. So a married couple with two minor children and $50,000 in taxable income would owe $297, according to a calculator created by the Tax Policy Center at the Brookings Institution.
But there’s a limit to how much anyone would ever pay. The penalty is capped at the national average annual price for a “bronze” health insurance plan on the Obamacare exchanges, the lowest-level plan available to everyone. The IRS hasn’t calculated what that amount is yet, but the Tax Policy Center estimates that it’s $3,600 for a single person and $11,000 for a family of four.
The penalties start getting bigger next year and will be $695 or 2.5 percent of income by 2016. So being uninsured when you can afford coverage — according to Obamacare, anyway — will get expensive. While it’s cheaper than health insurance, you don’t get anything in return and are still responsible for paying your own medical bills.
How is the individual mandate enforced?
In a word? Lightly. The ACA doesn’t let the IRS come after you if you don’t pay the penalty. Failing to pay isn’t a crime. The government can’t garnish your wages or put liens on your property to collect the money. Basically, the only way the IRS can get the dough against your will is to deduct it from your tax refund.
What’s more, the IRS really doesn’t have any way of checking whether you’re really insured if you say so when you file taxes.
Why are we doing all of this anyway again?
The theory behind the individual mandate is that the way to create an insurance market that lets people with pre-existing conditions get covered at reasonable prices is to make everyone participate.
Without some way to push healthy people into the insurance market, the fear is that it’ll fall apart. Mostly sick people would get insurance, which would drive up prices, which would lead to healthier people deciding not to buy any, which would force insurers to raise rates to cover their expenses, which would lead to even more healthy people opting out. That cycle is called a “death spiral” in insurancespeak.
The individual mandate is not a popular policy at all for obvious reasons (Obama himself even used to oppose it). But the Supreme Court ruled two years ago that it’s Constitutional, so we have to deal with it. Massachusetts has had an individual mandate since 2007, and it’s worked out pretty well there.

When many people imagine a frugal or minimalist life style, the picture in their mind is of extreme deprivation. To be a minimalist, they believe a frugal living would ostracize them from the rest of their peers (who are probably spending too much time coveting one another’s stuff). But, this simply is not the situation in my case – as most of my acquaintances don’t have a clue about how I save as much as I do.

Blackphone is a fully encrypted smartphone that aims to foil snooping governments, industry rivals and hackers.

Blackphone devices are to be made available in February 2014 through the secure communications firm Silent Circle as well as the Spanish-based manufacturer Geeksphone, in response to all the concern over the recent revelation about the great US surveillance of data and telephony.
According to Silent Circle CEO Mike Janke, his company has been working on the Blackphone concept even before the 2013 revelations about the wide-ranging US National Security Agency programs were leaked by Edward Snowden.
“We did this because there was a problem that was not being solved: secure communications,” Janke told AFP in an interview in the Silent Circle offices overlooking the Potomac River just outside Washington.
Silent Circle was formed in 2011 and by 2013 they had developed and launched apps with other services that allow existing smartphone and PC users to send encrypted messages and videos.
The Blackphone is an outgrowth from the previous security effort, says Janke, who is a retired Navy SEAL who co-founded Silent Circle along with several ex-SEALs and Silicon Valley cryptographic experts.
With Blackphone… “We offer completely encrypted, peer-to-peer communications. We have encrypted video, encrypted text and secure VoIP (Voice-over-Internet-Protocol) calls,” Janke said.
The founders include Phil Zimmermann, who created the widely used PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) standard, and former Apple cryptographic expert Jon Callas.
Last year, Silent Circle halted its encrypted email service to avoid becoming a target after the US government subpoenaed the records of a similar service called Lavabit.
“We destroyed all that data,” said Janke, while adding that the company never faced a subpoena.
Silent Circle customers include major global corporations, human rights activists and even the Tibetan government in exile.
Because of its work, he said, “almost all of the major smartphone manufacturers came to us” to collaborate on a more secure smartphone.
Janke said Silent Circle chose to form a joint venture for Blackphone with the small Spanish company which recently began making smartphones using the Firefox operating system.
Silent Circle developed a modified or “forked” version of Android called PrivatOS for the Blackphone, which is set to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 24.
Blackphone.. ‘It’s sexy, it’s thin’
The company declined to release detailed specifications or pricing ahead of the unveiling, but Janke said Blackphone will be sold around the world at prices lower than the iPhone 5S or Samsung Galaxy S4. According to Janke, the new Blackphone is to be comparable in terms of performance to those flagship devices. Blackphone is designed as a user-friendly phone that could be carried by executives, government officials, activists or ordinary people.
“It’s sexy, it’s thin, it’s sleek, but it also solves a problem,” Janke said.
“You can still go to Google and browse the web, but Google doesn’t know who you are. It’s a high-end smartphone. The user doesn’t have to know how to use or how to spell encryption.”
As an added assurance to customers, the Blackphone venture is incorporated in Switzerland with a Swiss data center and has “minimal data retention.”
“All we have is the user name you give us and a 10-digit phone number,” he said.
Even if the company faced a court order in Switzerland, it could only hand over the user name. Authorities seeking more information would need to subpoena a separate payment processing firm “and try to match that to our users,” Janke said.
Janke said there is interest in the device worldwide, and that Blackphone has “verbal pre-orders” from four international telecom carriers and 30 enterprise customers.
Interest in Blackphone, Janke said, suggests “several million” will be sold within 12 months, and some 10 million total over the coming four years.
He did not disclose where the Blackphone would be made, but said there would be “neutral” partners making components and a tightly controlled assembly process to ensure no backdoors are inserted.
Janke said the US State Department wanted to buy some of the phones and distribute them to human rights groups but that the company refused, out of concern that the Blackphone would be associated with the US government.
“We decided to distribute this ourselves,” he said.
Customers worldwide are interested “because it’s not just the NSA — there are 72 countries that have some NSA-like capabilities and they’re all spying on us and on each other. If you’re living in Kenya or Germany or Argentina, you have the same threats.”
Even though some reports suggest the NSA has found ways to intercept encrypted communications, Janke said his systems will be effective.
“We know that encryption works,” he said, adding that “brute force” attacks to break encryption are rare because they are time-consuming, and that spy agencies generally use other means like inserting viruses in emails or hardware that can intercept messages.
Because of this, Janke is careful not to promise too much. He said Blackphone is not a “hardened” device like some designed for military use.
“There is no such thing as a completely secure phone,” he said. “Nothing is going to protect you from your own behavior. But out of the box, this phone does a lot of things to protect your privacy.”

SALT LAKE CITY — A number of Utahns are buying what they think is undervalued foreign currency in hopes of having its value increase, offering a potential investment windfall.
Unfortunately, it’s a long-running scam perpetrated by dishonest investment brokers and online fraudsters.
Several years ago, Darren Marshall became aware of an investment opportunity in which he could buy Iraqi dinar currency on the long-term hope that he would reap high returns when the currency was “re-evaluated.”
The belief was that once the Iraq economy boomed and the currency was traded on the world market, those who purchased dinar previously could sell the bills on the open market and receive the newly inflated value.
The problem is such a scenario may never happen — something Marshall, a certified internal auditor by training, recognizes and readily admits.
“I think it’s ludicrous,” he said. “It’s a scam.”
Marshall, 42, of Salt Lake City, said he has read numerous online blogs that tout the legitimacy of the foreign currency speculation and describe it as “a high-risk investment.”
Despite that trepidation, Marshall said he has personally purchased $1,000 in Iraqi dinar on the chance he may eventually recoup his investment and maybe make a profit.
“I know it sounds crazy, but part of (the reason behind investing) was the enticing return rate,” he said.
Additionally, he said investing $1,000 was not so much that it would affect his lifestyle in any meaningful way.
“I had it to invest,” Marshall said, adding that he hopes he’ll be able to double his investment at some point.
For the past few years, people have been “investing” in Iraqi dinar, Vietnamese dong and a few other currencies in hopes that they will make it big when the monies are re-evaluated.
Unfortunately, it is a scam, explained Keith Woodwell, director of the Utah Division of Securities.
Woodwell said the fraud began years ago at the beginning of the Gulf War conflict in Kuwait and Iraq, initially involving members of the military and their families.
The misconception started because Kuwait’s dinar dropped during Operation Desert Storm, then, following the war, there was an oil boom and the currency increased dramatically, giving those who bought it huge returns.
The difference between the Kuwaiti currency situation and the Iraqi and Vietnamese currencies, Woodwell explained, is that Kuwait’s dinar was not inflated when it was worth less. It just organically increased in value when the country’s economy began to grow. The same cannot be said for other countries whose economies are inherently troubled, he said.
Today, unscrupulous brokers are again targeting investors by buying the foreign currencies in bulk and selling them at dramatic profits, Woodwell said. He attributes investor greed with prompting so many people to ignore economic logic and reason to risk their money on what he says is an obvious fraud.
“Some people won’t believe (it’s a scam), even when you tell them now,” he said. “It’s just human nature (to want to) believe that there is a way that we can ‘have our ship come in’ and get rich quick.”
Woodwell said some investors are not skeptical enough to question the legitimacy of some seemingly questionable investment opportunities, despite the red flags that may be present. While countries may decide to issue new currency when their economy begins to expand rapidly to avoid hyper-inflation, they basically exchange the old bills at the old value, so investors are typically left with devalued currency, he said.
“There has not been any kind of revaluation of the currency,” Woodwell said. “It’s happened in several countries in Africa (and Mexico) where they have had hyper-inflation.
“There is no conceivable way that people are going to make money off of this because they are buying the physical currency at an inflated rate to start with,” he explained. “So even if the currency (increases) a little bit because the economy goes up in that country, because you are buying it at an inflated exchange rate, you are not going to be able to sell it for what you bought it for.”
Businesses today are selling those currencies at huge markups over what is typically charged on the open market, said Scott Stone, senior vice president and foreign exchange manager for Zions Bank.
People will also buy them from banks, which is better because the exchange rate is less, but they will still never recoup their initial investment, Stone said.
“You should never buy paper bank note currency as an investment,” he said. “If it’s truly an investment, there are other ways to go about it than buying a stack of currency and putting in a shoebox under your bed and waiting for that currency to revalue.”

I remember the critics picking on these guys, calling them ‘wimps’. Being, as they were, surrounded by Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Janis, and the like, and with much more numbing power from these, people thought they should be more of a hard drum and base band. They were minstrels, they lilted, it’s very light by comparison. I’m really glad they did it just like this. To me, this is the sound of the late sixties’ consciousness when I was in High School.

Grand Funk is Grand Funk Railroad’s second studio album, and was released in December 1969 by Capitol Records. It was produced by Terry Knight and engineered by Ken Hamann. This release (aka “The Red Album”) was certified by RIAA with a gold record award, the first for the group. It includes a cover of The Animals’ “Inside Looking Out” which is still a cornerstone of the band’s live concerts today. Other key tracks include: “Got This Thing On The Move”, “In Need”, and “Paranoid”. The inside spread photograph of the trio, for the original album release, was used for the now infamous, $100,000, block-long and several stories high, New York City’s Times Square billboard ad for the album Closer To Home (1970). The producers sought to achieve a concentration on Mark Farner’s guitar, in response to the imbalance the band achieved in On Time with the prominence of Mel Schacher’s bass. This led to the unofficial name of “The Red Album”, as the guitar track, red in the studio, was turned up. This was reflected on the red cover art.

Try reading this without laughing your but off, as a guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Tazer for their anniversary submitted this:
Last weekend I saw something at Larry’s Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized Tazer.
The effects of the Tazer were supposed to be short lived, with no long term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety…. WAY TOO COOL!

Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home.. I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button and pressed it against a metal surface at the same time, I’d get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs.
AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.
Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn’t be all that bad with only two AAA batteries, right?
There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target.
I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and then thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised.
Am I wrong?
So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and Tazer in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; and a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.
All the while I’m looking at this little device measuring about 5″ long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference (loaded with two itsy, bitsy AAA batteries); pretty cute really, and thinking to myself, ‘no possible way!’
What happened next is almost beyond description, but I’ll do my best.
I’m sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head angled to one side so as to say, ‘Don’t do it stupid,’ reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn’t hurt all that bad.. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it.
I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and…
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. WHAT THE… !!!

I’m pretty sure Hulk Hogan ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs! The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.
WARNING: If you ever feel compelled to ‘mug’ yourself with a Tazer, one note of caution — there is NO such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor! A three second burst would be considered conservative!
A minute or so later (I can’t be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace.. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparently I had crapped in my shorts, but was too numb to know for sure, and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head, which I believe came from my hair.
I’m still looking for my testicles and I’m offering a significant reward for their safe return!

My wife can’t stop laughing about my experience, loved the gift and now regularly threatens me with it!

This album came out while I was still a sophomore at El Dorado High School. I remember that winter, sitting in a neighbor’s warm home listening to it for the first time, while my buddy finished getting ready to walk with me in the snow going to High School.
The Beatles, with their 60’s rock music, compelled me to take up guitar playing.

Morrison Hotel (sometimes referred to as Hard Rock Café from the title of the first side of the LP, whose second side is titledMorrison Hotel) is The Doors‘ fifth album. It was released in 1970. After their experimental work The Soft Parade was not as well-received as anticipated, the group went back to basics and back to their roots. On this album, there is a slight steer toward blues, which would be fully explored by the band on their next album, L.A. Woman. The strategy worked; even though no major hit singles were drawn from the album, Morrison Hotel reestablished The Doors as favorites of the critics, peaking at #4 on the US album chart, and when they followed with L.A. Woman the next year, they were rewarded with two more US Top 20 hits. The album also became the band’s highest charting studio album in the UK, where it peaked at #12.
Additional musicians include John Sebastian (credited as “G. Puglese,” for contractual reasons)[1] on harmonica and Lonnie Mack on bass and guitar.
The cover photo was taken at the actual Morrison Hotel located at 1246 South Hope Street in Los Angeles. The band asked the owners if they could photograph the hotel and they declined, so the band went inside when nobody was looking and took the photograph.[1]The rear cover features a photograph of the Hard Rock Café on 300 East 5th Street, Los Angeles.[2] The founders of the later and otherwise unrelated Hard Rock Cafe chain used the name, having seen it on the Doors’ album. The original cafe is no longer open for business.
My memory goes back to a time, where I Dream of Jeannie an American sitcom with a fantasy premise. The show starred Barbara Eden as a 2,000-year-old genie, and Larry Hagman as an astronaut who becomes her master, with whom she falls in love and eventually marries.
And, in the “real” world we discover some good although not classical belly dancing. However, as seen below, one can find a beautiful woman in superb physical condition with great abdominal muscles, and who is also extremely flexible with a superb sense of balance.

The video was filmed in 2006 at the City festival in Nikolaev, Ukraine where she was named Miss Belly Dance of Europe 2008, winner of Ukranian Belly Dance Championship 2007 and 2008 and runner up in a few others.
“Black Magic Woman” is a song written by Peter Green that first appeared as a Fleetwood Mac single in various countries in 1968, subsequently appearing on the 1969 Fleetwood Mac compilation albums English Rose (US) and The Pious Bird of Good Omen (UK). It became a classic hit by Santana and sung by Gregg Rolie in 1970, reaching #4 in the U.S. and Canadian charts, after appearing on their Abraxas album. The song became more closely associated with Santana than Fleetwood Mac.

Urban garden agriculture now has a growing interest from local as well as national people. This trend is a true cause for celebration. In fact, I’ve been encouraging everyone to plant a “Victory Garden” as a step toward fixing our broken food system. During the previous Victory Garden period Americans produced over 40% of the vegetables in America in their yards.
A great way to improve your health, help build a sustainable food system, and support our planet as it struggles to make room for increasing numbers is to growing your own Urban Garden as well as participating in growing a community Urban Garden. Food grown in your own Urban Garden is fresher, more nutritious, and tastes better than store-bought food—and you can not beat the cost savings!
Having a Urban garden is key to saving energy, protecting water quality and topsoil, and promoting biodiversity and beautifying densely populated communities. Remember, plants are our richest source of natural medicine.
For all of those reasons and many more, urban agriculture is growing so quickly that changes in local ordinances are not able to keep up. Zoning laws are outdated and out of step with today’s world, causing a flurry of legal conflicts, as well as a good deal of confusion about what people can and cannot do on their own land.
Every city has different laws and ordinances, and there are no standards spanning jurisdictional lines.
I encourage you to get involved in growing your own food, but remember the important preliminary step of finding out what your zoning laws allow. There are often restrictions governing the raising of goats, chickens, bees, and even where you can plant a simple vegetable garden.
Failing to follow these ordinances can result in some very unpleasant legal snafus. The laws are changing but not quickly enough. Know your rights, as you never know when you may be confronted by an angry neighbor who is out of sorts because your overly exuberant rooster awakened him at sunrise.
A few US cities are showing innovative examples of how laws can be updated to meet 21st Century needs. Making the shift from unsustainable, health and Earth-destroying monoculture to locally produced real food requires thinking outside the box—and a few brilliant thinkers are giving the rest of us a lot to think about!
A few notable urban farmers are changing the world one backyard at a time by challenging City Halls across the country to rewrite old laws so that they can bring fresh, homegrown eggs and organic veggies to their fellow urbanites.
In the featured video, “Gangster Gardener” Ron Finley is turning Los Angeles on its nose with his no-nonsense approach to healthy eating. The city of LA issued a warrant for his arrest for the unthinkable crime of growing tomatoes and kale on a small plot of unused land, about 10 feet wide by 150 feet long—basically, a strip of dead grass.
With the help of his local councilman, Finley beat the city of LA and is using his experience as an opportunity to educate his community about how to turn “food deserts” into “food forests.”
Finley says, “Growing your own food is like printing your own money.” Just about everyone can relate to that! But what if your home doesn’t have space for a garden? If you don’t have a plot of land available, what about a rooftop?
In order to think outside the box, urban gardener Roman Gaus has had to think inside the box—an aquaponics box, that is. Gaus combines aquaculture with hydroponics to create a closed soil-free system to grow vegetables in a way that is extremely efficient. Aquaponics requires 90 percent less water than traditional soil-based agriculture. The vegetables grow in circulated water and are nourished by the waste products of the fish that live in that water, in a closed system that allows both to flourish.
Yes, the plants feed on fish poop! This system is completely contained in a “box.”2The UF Box system is designed for small-scale production and can be placed on a roof, in a backyard, in a parking lot, at a neighborhood co-op or a school, and is mobile and transportable. He claims his UF Box can completely feed a family of three, both in terms of veggies and fish. He also offers much larger rooftop systems that can sit atop any flat-roofed building and feed hundreds of people in a community. Think of the potential for a large, flat-roofed big box store!
Your food has the greatest impact on your ecological footprint—more than housing, energy or transportation, and this is one way to drastically reduce your carbon footprint. But even if you aren’t ready for an aquaponics system, lack of space is not a deal breaker when it comes to growing your own food.
Regardless of space, you can produce your own food. Take sprouts, for example. Sprouts are a nutritional powerhouse, containing up to 30 times the nutrients of organic vegetables from your own garden. Sprouts also allow your body to extract more of the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and essential fats from the other foods you eat. Growing your own sprouts is quite practical and takes less space and time than a full sized garden.
Rather than growing them in Ball jars, try growing them in potting soil. It only takes about a week before you can harvest, and in a 10×10 tray you can harvest between one and two pounds of sunflower sprouts. That will last you about three days and you can store them in the fridge for about a week. I have been doing this for the past year and have used the sprouts to replace my salad greens. The sunflower spouts give you the most volume for your work and, in my palate, have the best taste.

Nevertheless, there are many different ways to grow your own food, even if you live in an apartment. If you have a yard, you are truly blessed! But if not, Alex Mitchell’s book The Edible Balcony is an excellent resource for how to grow produce in small spaces. You can use virtually every square foot of your space, including vertical space, for growing food. Hanging baskets are ideal for a wide variety of foods, such as strawberries, leafy greens, runner beans, pea shoots, tomatoes, and a variety of herbs. And instead of flowers, window boxes can hold herbs, greens, radishes, scallions, bush beans, strawberries, chard, and chilies—to name just a few.
While you will obviously need to use pots if you don’t have a garden plot, avoid using lots of small pots because they dry out too quickly. Instead, opt for large yet lightweight containers or even the newer cloth pots. You may also want to consider self-watering containers, which can save you time. (You could even make your own… Mitchell shows you how in her book.) And don’t forget to compost—even apartment dwellers can compost successfully.
Many people are digging up their lawns and turning that valuable ground into a garden. Lawns are not good for the environment, for numerous reasons:
- Lawns are basically grass monocultures, which is why they are so expensive and labor-intensive to maintain
- Lawns require massive amounts of water, heavy fertilizers, herbicides, and other chemicals that give off nitrous oxide (a greenhouse gas) as well as producing chemical runoff that pollutes our waterways—and lawns give nothing back for all of this labor and cost
- Most people maintain their lawns with fossil-fuel-guzzling lawnmowers, edgers, and weed whackers
- Grass emits more carbon dioxide than it sequesters. One study3 found that lawn-related maintenance releases four times as much carbon dioxide as the grass itself, concluding that grass lawns are polluting the environment. Another study concluded that lawns are even worse for the planet than cornfields, in terms of carbon dioxide production4
- Lawns are like concrete to most wildlife species and offer little benefit to animals. If you don’t want your entire lawn to be a garden, use some of it to create a wildlife habitat.5, 6
Across the US and Canada, a war has been raged against urban garden homeowners who want to plant gardens on their own property.7Legal codes that outlaw planting vegetables on a large percentage of your yard, or restrict them to only certain areas like the backyard, out of view of the public, truly defy common sense—especially considering the negative impact lawns have on the environment.
With resources being increasingly stretched, we need a clear, comprehensive policy on urban agriculture that crosses jurisdictional and geographic boundaries. It’s time for agricultural entrepreneurs, activists, policy makers, and ordinary homeowners to band together and propose some well-defined, fully articulated policies and codes, with incentives that make it attractive for people to grow their own food. Even some of the cities that espouse the virtues of healthy living, buying local, and spending time outdoors fail to update their zoning codes, which prohibit urban agriculture and encourage the proliferation of fast food drive-thrus.
The more involved you can be with your local urban planning and development agencies, the faster our outdated zoning laws will be changed. If you want to see a beautiful example of this, take a look at a report called “Cultivate L.A.,”8 prepared as a Masters Thesis project by a few UCLA students. The report takes an intensive look at how to best support the growth of urban agriculture in Los Angeles, including a comprehensive needs assessment of the city. Imagine if students were to do one of these for every American city!
Some cities are already building sustainable landscapes and should be praised for their innovation in turning vacant lots into vegetable plots. The following are just a few examples that may inspire you to suggest a similar urban gardening project to your own city planners:
- A new law in California, signed by Governor Jerry Brown, promotes community gardens and small farms by allowing municipalities to lower property taxes for homeowners who commit to dedicating their land to growing food for a minimum of five years.9 There are five innovative urban gardening programs in LA alone,10 and others in San Francisco.
- Seattle has loosened its rules for backyard goats, domestic fowl, farm animals, and even bees. Seattle also basically wrote the book on community gardening, now boasting 82 neighborhood pea patches, 24 of which are new or expanded. Seattle’s community gardens give about 10 tons of food to local food banks and hot meal programs every year.11, 12, 13
- Detroit has revised its rules governing compost and greenhouses and has new urban agriculture ordinances.14 Detroit and Cleveland are offering abandoned lots at almost zero cost to those who commit to growing food on them. In 2010, New York City lifted the ban against urban beekeeping.15 For a list of US cities where beekeeping is still illegal, click here (as of 2010).
- Santa Fe, New Mexico, is drafting amendments to city code for urban agriculture that will permit zoning for urban food production, farm stands, and even large-scale community gardens.16
- Chicago O’Hare Airport is using goats and llamas to clear airfield brush instead of lawnmowers.17 And in Seattle, 120 goats from Rent-A-Ruminant are hard at work clearing a hillside below the Alaska Way Viaduct, as well as providing an entertaining diversion for local businessmen.18
Growing numbers of people are becoming excited about local food, healthier eating, and greener cities, sparking renewed interest in the development of urban agriculture around the country. But many don’t know anything about their local ordinances or where to go for help before enthusiastically plunging their shovels into the ground—only to be surprised later with a citation for breaking the law.
These ordinances are constantly changing, so you really need to do your due diligence in planning your urban garden. Below are a few organizations and resources that may assist you on your quest. Whether it’s organic veggies, a berry patch, or a chicken tractor you want to build, make sure you are proceeding within the legal guidelines before you start in order to avoid major headaches down the road.
American Community Gardening Association (ACGA) – Devoted to community gardening and greening up communities across the nation. The organization has local chapters across the country. Sustainable Cities Institute – Research and innovation about how to make cities more sustainable, including planning and zoning for urban agriculture Practice Urban Agriculture (March 2010) – Information about urban agricultural zoning; lists a good number of government initiatives, plans, and ordinances that are up for vote in the near future Food Not Lawns – A sustainability movement focused on getting rid of lawns in favor of more ecofriendly alternatives; also has chapters in nearly every state across the country Lots 2 Green – Provides technical assistance to communities in order to facilitate their using vacant lots and other urban properties for community gardens and farms

The Black Eyed Peas is an American hip hop group. The Black Eyed Peas consists of rappers will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo, and singer Fergie. Originally the band was an alternative hip hop group, but the Black Eyed Peas have subsequently added music from R&B, pop, and EDM/dance influences. While the Black Eyed Peas was founded in Los Angeles in 1995, the band was not formally recognized until the release of their third album Elephunk in 2003 that they found widespread acclaim and achieved high record sales. Since that time, the group has sold an estimated 56 million records worldwide.[2] Based on the ratings of the Nielsen SoundScan, the Black Eyed Peas were the second-best-selling artist/group of all time for downloaded tracks, with over 42 million sales as of the end of 2011.[3]
The Black Eyed Peas first major hit was made with the 2003 single “Where Is the Love?” from their album Elephunk, which also went over the top charts in 13 countries like the United Kingdom. The Black eyed Peas also spent seven (7) weeks as the number one band and continued to become Great Britain’s largest selling music single of 2003. Another single music hit in Europe came from the Elephunk album was “Shut Up“. Their fourth album, Monkey Business, was an even bigger worldwide success, certified 4× Platinum in the U.S., and spawning four singles, “Don’t Phunk with My Heart“, “Don’t Lie“, “My Humps” and “Pump It“. In 2009, the group became one of only 11 artists to have simultaneously held the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, with their singles “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling“, which topped the chart for an unprecedented 26 consecutive weeks. This album The E.N.D. later produced a third Hot 100 number-one placement with “Imma Be“, making the group one of few to ever place three number one singles on the chart from the same album, before being followed with “Rock That Body” and “Meet Me Halfway“, which peaked in the Top 10 of the Hot 100. “I Gotta Feeling” became the first single to sell more than one million downloads in the United Kingdom.[4]
The Black Eyed Peas were ranked 12th on Billboard‘s Decade-End Chart Artist of the Decade, and 7th in the Hot 100 Artists of the Decade. At the 52nd Grammy Awards ceremony, held in January 2010, they won three awards out of six nominations. In November 2010, they released the album The Beginning. In February 2011, the group performed at theSuper Bowl XLV halftime show. The album’s first two singles, “The Time (Dirty Bit)” and “Just Can’t Get Enough“, became international hits and topped the charts in many countries. The single Don’t Stop The Party became an international hit too.

Remember that the ego is afraid of the light, and may try to drag you back into dark thoughts. Keep your sight on the Light! By the weekend, you’ve recovered from the Stickin’ Thinkin’ roller coaster. You gain valuable life lessons by observing yourself objectively. You decide that you don’t want to bring those pessimistic thoughts into 2014, so you leave them behind in 2013.
