JAZZ San Diego Collective

2019 guest performer at Humphrey’s “Back Stage”

Maverick [free roaming, patriot branded] Clifford Taylor is an enthusiast looking to support other musicians as a proficient accompanist; he is available to musicians who want someone to engage in a JAM SESSION.

jam session is a relatively informal musical event, process, or activity where musicians, typically instrumentalists, play improvised solos and vamp over tunes, drones, songs, and chord progressions. To “jam” is to improvise music without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements, except for when the group is playing well-known jazz standards or covers of existing popular songs. Original jam sessions, also called “free flow sessions,” are often used by musicians to develop new material (music) and find suitable arrangements. Both styles can be used simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to evenings where a jam session coordinator or host acts as a “gatekeeper” so that appropriate-level performers take the stage to sophisticated improvised recording sessions by professionals which are intended to be broadcast live on radio or TV or edited and released to the public.

MAVERICK is a roaming free-spirited person. His ingenuous qualities include being independent-minded, unorthodox, free, noble, honest, and open while a bit feral, wild, dangerous, and unfettered by cultural norms. Maverick is authentic masculinity!

What is Authentic Masculinity?

Authentic Masculinity is virtuous masculinity. Virtuous masculinity is strong and leads to success in all areas of life because it requires self-mastery: the daily practice of self-government, self-discipline, and self-restraint.

THOUGHT:

Hmmm.. so, by social norms, Jesus of Nazareth was a bit of a MAVERICK in his time?

Maverick Roams: Music Performance History

2018 January: OPEN-MIC session

Maverick performed at Fast Times, a neighborhood restaurant and bar conveniently located on the border of Bay Park and Clairemont, just one mile east of Mission Bay.

Fast Times is a place where everyone (especially musicians) can have fun.  Fast Times offers: 12 local craft beers on draft and a full bar, a menu that blends SoCal favorites with pub-style classics, kids menus and a dog friendly patio,

And it is here at Fast Times, you will  find Maverick stirring up the sound with his unique fusion of Chicago style jazzy-rock-blues dance music.  This evening, Maverick was introduced to a good harmonica player visiting from Hawaii, and together they got the house band taking solos to the song: “Get Out Of My Life, Woman” by Lee Dorsey (New Orleans Soul); mixed with the sound of Maverick’s Jazz-Rock-Blues guitar, played with a strong rhythm vibe (perfect for intense, regularly, repeated patterns of movement, i.e. dancing).

Get out my life, woman; you don’t love me no more
Get out my life, woman; you don’t love me no more
Get out my life, woman; you don’t love me no more

Get out my eyes, teardrops; I gotta see my way around
Get out my eyes, teardrops; I gotta see my way around
Get out my life, heartache; nothin’ but heartache by the pound

Get off the ladder, woman; I’ve got to climb up to the top
Get off the ladder, woman; I’ve got to climb up to the top
Get off the ladder, woman; there is nothin’ gonna make me stop

Get out my way, woman; I gotta be movin’ on
Get out the way, woman; I gotta be movin’ on
Get out the way, woman; I gotta be movin’ on

Get out my life, woman; you don’t love me no more
Get out my life, woman; you don’t love me no more
Get out my life, woman; you don’t love me no more

2018 February: OPEN-MIC session

Maverick  shows up, again, on Tuesday night to perform and jam with other guest musicians at Fast Times; this time because he has learned that his musician friend from 2006, pianist Craig Horner, is playing keys in the house band.  Maverick invited guest tenor saxophone player, Kevin DelMastro, to solo on “Comin Home, Baby”.

The 3-hr Stage Production started 2017

Maverick is arranging and producing a 3-hour musical song/dance extravaganza that is formatted for audience participation. He is sharing years of experience with young, emerging song / dance artists looking for opportunity and a break.

For example, Maverick is now working for fun as he returns to the entertainment stage, performing his energetic guitar style and singing with the young and vibrant, singer / dancer,  Ms. Tamara Rodriguez.

As he collaborates with young artists, it is possible to bring the vibrant musical sounds that blend the best of Pop-Techno-HipHop-Latin rhythm patterns such as music by Ms. Rodriguez, into Maverick’s unique and mature, discernible guitar chops.

Go Cliff “Maverick” is ready and set for the show.

This song / dance production will be a performance built on three (3) 45-minute sets with 15-minute guest performances in each hour.

The objective for this 3-hour production is to create an extraordinary, entertaining, participant event for person’s who desire to “Put On The Ritz”.  Consider attending this special event, with this in mind (costumes and dress) before you come:

Have you seen the well to do
Up and down Park Avenue
On that famous thoroughfare
With their noses in the air

High hats and narrow collars
White spats and lots of dollars
Spending every dime
For a wonderful time

Now, if you’re blue
And you don’t know where to go to
Why don’t you go where fashion sits
Puttin’ on the Ritz
Different types who wear a day coat
Pants with stripes and cutaway coat
Perfect fits
Puttin’ on the Ritz

Dressed up like a million dollar trooper
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper
Super duper

Come, let’s mix where Rockefeller’s
Walk with sticks or “umbrellas”
In their mitts
Puttin’ on the Ritz

So, come and attend this event.. pay the entrance fee to become a part of the show.. and let us ALL see what you and your gal look like “Puttin’ on the Ritz”

The following items are song/dance music arrangements made by Clifford ‘Maverick’ Taylor.  These pieces are studio recordings of music instruments excluding Maverick’s guitar track, (a track that contains his performance).

So, with three (3)  hours of music and dance performance, the themes will include:

Passing Musical Memories

(San Diego: Friday, February 10, 2017)

Just now, I’m listening to these songs, considering each word in each song as I hear a message from Joni.  With sixty-five years under my belt, I can easily imagine by recall the very scenes that Joni describes by these songs; only I experience the thoughts in the context of a man toward a woman. Dedicated to my loving memory (1973-74) of Robin Baxter.. she taught me in a fun way that hurt in the end.  So much to remember, I need to write an auto-biography…

02:50 Help Me
06:13 Free Man In Paris
09:15 People’s Parties
11:34 The Same Situation
Side Two

17:39 Down To You

27:43 Raised On Robbery
30:49 Trouble Child
34:43 Twisted

Song 01: Court and Spark

Love came to my door
With a sleeping roll
And a madman’s soul
He thought for sure I’d seen him
Dancing up a river in the dark
Looking for a woman
To court and spark
He was playing on the sidewalk
For passing change
When something strange happened
Glory train passed through him
So he buried the coins he made
In People’s Park
And went looking for a woman
To court and spark
It seemed like he read my mind
He saw me mistrusting him
And still acting kind
He saw how I worried, sometimes
I worry sometimes
“All the guilty people, ” he said
They’ve all seen the stain
On their daily bread
On their christian names
I cleared myself
I sacrificed my blues
And you could complete me
I’d complete you
His eyes were the color of the sand
And the sea
And the more he talked to me, you know
The more he reached me
But I couldn’t let go of L.A.
City of the fallen angels

Song 02: Help Me

Help me
I think I’m falling
In love again
When I get that crazy feeling, I know
I’m in trouble again
I’m in trouble
‘Cause you’re a rambler and a gambler
And a sweet-taIking-ladies man
And you love your lovin’
But not like you love your freedom
Help me
I think I’m falling
In love too fast
It’s got me hoping for the future
And worrying about the past
‘Cause I’ve seen some hot hot blazes
Come down to smoke and ash
We love our lovin’
But not like we love our freedom
Didn’t it feel good
We were sitting there talking
Or lying there not talking
Didn’t it feel good
You dance with the lady
With the hole in her stocking
Didn’t it feel good
Didn’t it feel good
Help me
I think I’m falling
In love with you
Are you going to let me go there by myself
That’s such a lonely thing to do
Both of us flirting around
Flirting and flirting
Hurting too
We love our lovin’
But not like we love our freedom

Song 03: Free Man in Paris

The way I see it, he said
You just can’t win it
Everybody’s in it for their own gain
You can’t please ’em all
There’s always somebody calling you down

I do my best
And I do good business
There’s a lot of people asking for my time
They’re trying to get ahead
They’re trying to be a good friend of mine
I was a free man in Paris
I felt unfettered and alive
There was nobody calling me up for favors

And no one’s future to decide
You know I’d go back there tomorrow
But for the work I’ve taken on
Stoking the star-maker machinery
Behind the popular song

I deal in dreamers
And telephone screamers
Lately I wonder what I do it for
If l had my way
I’d just walk out those doors

And wander
Down the Champs Elysees
Going cafe to cabaret
Thinking how I’ll feel when I find
That very good friend of mine
I was a free man in Paris
I felt unfettered and alive
Nobody was calling me up for favors
No one’s future to decide
You know I’d go back there tomorrow

But for the work I’ve taken on
Stoking the star maker machinery
Behind the popular song

Song 04: People’s Parties

All the people at this party
They’ve got a lot of style
They’ve got stamps of many countries
They’ve got passport smiles
Some are friendly
Some are cutting
Some are watching it from the wings
Some are standing in the centre
Giving to get something

Photo Beauty gets attention
Then her eye paint’s running down
She’s got a rose in her teeth
And a lampshade crown
One minute she’s so happy
Then she’s crying on someone’s knee
Saying, laughing and crying
You know it’s the same release

I told you when I met you
I was crazy
Cry for us all, Beauty
Cry for Eddie in the corner
Thinking he’s nobody
And Jack behind his joker
And stone-cold Grace behind her fan
And me in my frightened silence
Thinking I don’t understand

I feel like I’m sleeping
Can you wake me?
You seem to have a broader sensibility
I’m just living on nerves and feelings
With a weak and a lazy mind
And coming to people’s parties
Fumbling deaf dumb and blind

I wish I had more sense of humor
Keeping the sadness at bay
Throwing the lightness on these things
Laughing it all away
Laughing it all away
Laughing it all away
